Faith is unquestionably the foundational condition for a spiritual life, and it is a grace from God. Openness toward God and spirituality is certainly commendable, but in the end, it is not enough. We all know people who profess belief in a divinity or in chakras, yet are unwilling to follow the path set by the God of the Bible. Some, like the woman in Proverbs who says, “I had to offer sacrifices, and today I have paid my vows” (Proverbs 7:14, ESV), may even cloak their choices in religious language while heading in a completely different direction. They may mix sensual and spiritual language in order to deceive. There are also those for whom faith is both the starting and ending point, with little more than nominal progress in the formation of their spiritual inner life.
