There is a lot of distraction in today’s life, as mentioned elsewhere. We need to identify our main goals in life and pursue them, even at the expense of these distractions. Then, we need to identify the distractions and eliminate them. This is true when dealing with a two-year-old as well. We can easily introduce distractions into their lives — even with good intentions — at such a young age. Supposedly, we want to keep them away from smartphones or tablets, but we may end up overloading them with YouTube instead. One important issue is to make sure we give them a love for reading before other activities become more appealing. Read to them, as I suggested elsewhere, from their seminal authors — those who have been gifted by God to write for children, and whose works have stood the test of time. Why take risks with new authors, when so many great ones have already proven their worth across generations? I’m not saying we shouldn’t buy books written by contemporary authors, but at least we should balance the two categories. Start teaching children from the very beginning with their seminal authors. In this way, we give them the opportunity to open their minds to knowledge.
