Maturity also consists in minimizing the distance between who someone appears to be and who they truly are. We all have a fallen nature, and we are not knowledgeable in every field. We need to admit that, while still being prepared to demonstrate competence in the areas we are familiar with.

It is also important not to pretend we are more spiritual than we truly are. This matters for several reasons. First, it is beneficial for us to constantly remember that we are still on the journey—we have not yet reached the destination. Pretending otherwise means living a lie, conveying something untrue, which is, plainly, a sin. Second, it is better for others, as it protects them from imagining that there is some vast gap between us and them, caused by supposed supernatural spiritual abilities.
