Throughout the Bible, we find many episodes involving people who took dreams very seriously. Jacob dreamed of a ladder reaching to heaven. Pharaoh dreamed of fat and skinny cows. Joseph interpreted the dreams of two of Pharaoh’s officials. Daniel interpreted the dreams of the emperor.
As a starting point, we should observe what kinds of dreams tend to recur and then try to relate them to what is happening in our lives or what we are doing in the days following the dream.
For example, some people report dreaming for years about the same theme—such as a house that needs finishing touches—even though the details vary. Maybe the building has rooms that are not yet used, or the dreamer did not know about their existence, or he has forgotten about them. The house can be in a bad neighborhood, and is surrounded by mud. What might this recurring dream be trying to say?
(Another fascinating experience is when you recognize a short episode in real life that you had previously seen in a dream.)
Interpreting such dreams is far from the level of skill shown by Joseph or Daniel, but even so, these dreams can still carry a message we should pay attention to.
