reading everyday

After reading the Bible for several decades, I feel a deep sense of gratitude toward the Puritan author John Trapp, whose writings have accompanied nearly every day—especially every morning—of my life since I responded seriously to God’s call to use my time more wisely. This is why I will rely heavily on footnotes inspired by his commentaries. Consider this also an invitation: you, too, might find in his works a helpful companion for your daily reading of Scripture.

I believe that today’s readers of the Bible should also become acquainted with other foundational thinkers—voices that can shed light on aspects of life that often appear ambiguous. These are seminal authors whom God has endowed with talent and clarity of thought to express His truth in a compelling way.

From the non-Christian world, thinkers like Seneca and Epictetus provide valuable insight into human nature, self-discipline, and moral responsibility. From the Christian tradition, authors like Augustine and Origen offer profound reflections on theology, suffering, spiritual growth, and the inner life. These writers are remarkably practical, and engaging constantly with their works can help one better understand not only biblical truths but also the complexities of everyday life.
